Television, the Year in Review
Julia Louis Dreyfus in Veep is a hit and a great example of a non-empowered woman in a position of power. Hillary and Condie she is not! As former senator and now vice-president Selina Meyer, Julia’s character is disregarded and skillfully brings disregard upon her self; catch the episode to hear her by say to her tall male colleagues, things such as “Can you please kneel down, I feel like I fell into a well.” Julia’s been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, and others, so she is quite a hit with former fans of Seinfeld and The New Adventures of Old Christine.
The accolades to HBO are well deserved and Veep is great for laughs, but if you are feeling like Selina, break the “lack of confidence” habit of viewing. Try not to watch the all day marathon before the next season opener. Even the best habit breaking practices will need refreshed after ingesting an overdose dose of insecurity.
1600 Penn was not so fortunate. The series originally aired as a mid-season replacement from December 2012 to March 2013 but it was announced on May 9, 2013, that NBC has canceled the series.
The comedy about the non-traditional dysfunctional Gilchrist family in the White House presented inept images of both the president, portrayed by Bill Pullman and his new wife, played by Jenna Elfman. The spotlight goes to the inept son Josh Gad, known as Skip, for his fully inept yet fully funny portrayal of the Gilchrist son.
Is NBC’s message that politicians and their families are basically inept or is this just a parody? NBC’s The West Wing television fantasy featuring an oval office staff, now available on Netflix, answered the question by taking on big issues. There was no illusion about reality in the series, it was pure fiction, followed mostly by high-income viewers. If you weren’t sitting back and watching consciously, and had strong reactions to the show’s political messages, it’s time to look at the “story” of the series. What irks you about it? And what can you do so that you are living a Real Conscious Life instead of the one that looks wrong a few feet from the screen?
